MAIN STORY

🔥 A Walmart Call. A Police Bullet. A 1-Year-Old Dead.

⚡ THE SPARK

A reported Walmart shoplifting call in Senatobia, Mississippi, ended with a 1-year-old boy dead.

Kohen Wiley was in the car with his mother and a family friend when police responded to an alleged shoplifting call involving diapers. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says the driver drove toward officers. Kohen’s mother disputes that account. Now the family, represented by Ben Crump, is demanding bodycam, dashcam, and Walmart surveillance footage, and pursuing an independent autopsy.

Because when a baby is killed by police, “trust us” is not enough.

🧠 THE LAYER BELOW

This story is not just about one police shooting. It is about what America chooses to treat as dangerous, what it chooses to protect, and how quickly a Black family can be pushed from suspicion into tragedy.

  • The original allegation was small. The outcome was irreversible. Police were reportedly responding to a shoplifting call involving diapers, an allegation the family denies. But even if every official detail were true, the moral question remains: how does a low-level retail call become a fatal encounter? A store can replace merchandise. A family cannot replace a child.

  • The fight now is over evidence, not emotion. Police say the vehicle moved toward officers. Kohen’s mother says that is not what happened. That is why the demand for footage matters so much. For Black families, video has become the difference between being believed and being buried under an official statement.

  • Senatobia’s Black residents are not treating this as an isolated moment. Community advocates say Kohen’s death lands on top of years of tense police encounters in the town, including past controversies involving Black residents. That history matters because trust does not disappear overnight. It erodes every time people feel power is protected faster than people are.

🎯 THE REAL QUESTION

At what point does “officer safety” become a phrase that explains everything and answers nothing?

🔮 WHAT’S NEXT

The family wants the footage released. They want an independent autopsy. They want the full story. And the public should want that too, not because the internet needs another outrage cycle, but because accountability cannot depend on patience from the grieving.

Kohen Wiley was not a headline, a case number, or a political talking point. His grandmother said he had “the prettiest smile” and loved pushing a toy lawnmower that blew bubbles. That is the part that should stay with us. Before we argue about the call, the car, or the investigation, start here:

A baby is dead. The truth should not be hidden.

CAST YOUR VOTE

45.0% of you voted “Nothing, unless systems change” in last week’s poll: What actually protects Black women in America?

  • “The problem here is this separated thinking that somehow black women are disjointed from black men. This article, this author of the article, and to a larger part, the current political structure, adhere to a contrived notion that the black collective are separate. This is a dangerous and purposeful endeavor to keep the black community fixed in its socioeconomic position. Please illustrate the other ‘racial’ groups that move in an independent manner, men separated from their women. I would also love to see how successful any group would be if it solely operated on this separate principle. Forget the comment made about Michelle Obama because that gets into feelings and emotions. The real focus should be on black collective economics. How it should be: You may talk about us, but you cannot harm us because our economics is on point. Focus on that and get out of emotional gaslighting politics. ”

🪎 Trump Moves To Shut Down America’s First Black Reparations Program. The Trump administration is jumping into a lawsuit to stop Evanston, Illinois, from paying Black residents up to $25,000 for past housing discrimination. The program, launched in 2021 and funded by cannabis tax revenue, was the first of its kind in the country and had already sent millions to eligible families. DOJ officials argue the program is unconstitutional because it uses race-based criteria. Evanston leaders say the reparations are tied to documented housing discrimination that harmed Black residents for generations. Supporters say this isn’t just about Evanston, it’s a warning shot at every city considering reparations next. (The Guardian)

🔪 Trump Claims Vandals Slashed Reflecting Pool, But Still Shows No Proof. President Trump is doubling down on claims that vandals damaged the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, saying someone cut a massive slit through the pool lining with a knife. The problem? Neither the White House nor the Interior Department has publicly shown evidence of the alleged cut. The pool, recently renovated for more than $16 million, has been hit with algae, peeling paint, and mounting questions. Interior officials say arrests and citations have been made, but Trump’s specific claim remains unproven. Now the controversy is turning into a messy fight over vandalism, optics, and accountability. 🏡 Senate Takes Aim At Wall Street Buying Up America’s Homes. The Senate just passed a major housing bill that could make it harder for Wall Street investors to scoop up single-family homes while regular families get priced out. The bipartisan package passed 85-5 and now heads to the House, where lawmakers could vote within days. The bill would fund new home construction, cut red tape for local building approvals, and restrict large institutional investors from buying single-family houses. Supporters say it could lower housing costs and help families compete again. Critics will be watching whether Congress actually delivers relief before voters hit the polls in 2026. (NBC News)

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Obama Presidential Center

Chicago’s South Side just got a glow-up for the ages, the flashy new Obama Presidential Center threw open its doors Friday, turning Juneteenth into a full-blown Black excellence celebration.

Michelle had Barack tearing up with that heartfelt tribute, while Stevie Wonder, J-Hud, and Legend brought the vibes. But with the price tag hitting $850 million, haters are already asking: Is this hope for the hood… or just another monument for the elites? South Side forever!
