MAIN STORY

I Think it's Time to Watch the Party Die

With tears in his eyes, Wallo once told Grammy-winning artist Lil Durk, ‘If I didn’t let that sh*t go, I wouldn’t be right here today… I had to let that sh*t go, and when I let that sh*t go, I started to grow and I started to glow.’* Wallo’s emotion stemmed from his own journey, as he had to forgive the person responsible for his brother’s death, a lesson he hoped Durk would take to heart.

Durk, one of the most successful artists from Chicago’s drill scene, was arrested this week on a murder-for-hire charge in Florida, highlighting the toll of street conflicts that drill music often depicts. Drill, known for its violent themes, has seen several of its stars meet tragic ends: Pop Smoke, King Von, and FBG Duck have all lost their lives. These tragedies force a difficult question: Is it time to re-evaluate hip-hop culture’s relationship with the streets?

Here’s What We Know About Lil Durk’s Latest Arrest:

  • Lil Durk was recently arrested in Florida following charges against five individuals affiliated with his hip-hop group, Only The Family (OTF), for a 2022 shooting in Los Angeles.

  • The shooting allegedly targeted the cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo as retaliation for the 2020 death of King Von, a rising artist affiliated with OTF.

  • Reports suggest the five men accused of the 2022 shooting were motivated by an unnamed co-conspirator’s offer of “money and lucrative music opportunities” in exchange for action against Quando Rondo.

  • In the 2022 shooting, Quando Rondo and his sister escaped unharmed, but his cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, was killed.

  • King Von’s death in 2020, reportedly at the hands of an associate of Quando Rondo, intensified existing tensions.

  • In 2022, Lil Durk also faced—and had dropped—attempted murder charges related to a 2019 Atlanta shooting.

  • Allegations surfaced that OTF member Jam, a childhood friend of Lil Durk’s, reportedly cooperated with federal authorities, even wearing a wire for several years.

Charleston White recently claimed, "I don't think we'll hear drill music ever again," suggesting that Lil Durk’s arrest marks a victory for the Black community. Breaking the cycle of violence in hip-hop requires solutions that address both individual and community challenges. Conflict resolution and mentorship programs can guide artists to manage rivalries peacefully, while collaborative projects offer constructive outlets. Media platforms can also play a role by promoting growth and resilience over violence. A Harvard panel echoed these points, with critics like Lupe Fiasco and Dee-1 warning that drill music can desensitize audiences and reinforce harmful stereotypes. Others noted the importance of supporting positive narratives to help shift the culture away from glorifying violence.

THE FLIP SIDE

‘Ozempic Butt’—The Surprising Side Effect of Hollywood’s Favorite Weight Loss Drug

Medications like Ozempic and Wegovy have become quite popular for helping people shed pounds quickly, but they can come with some surprising side effects. One of these is "Ozempic Butt," which refers to sagging skin on the buttocks, a common issue when losing weight rapidly, especially in curvier areas. Experts explain that while these medications work by curbing appetite and changing hunger signals, the fast weight loss can result in loose skin that doesn’t snap back right away. To tackle or prevent this, experts recommend aiming for a slower, more sustainable weight loss journey.

Incorporating exercise, especially resistance training, and exploring skin-tightening treatments can help improve skin elasticity. Staying well-hydrated and taking vitamins that support collagen and elastin production can also help keep your skin firm. For those who need extra help, surgical options are available as a last resort. Being aware of these potential side effects can empower people to make informed decisions when considering these weight loss medications.
