MAIN STORY

Is the NBA’s Decline Inevitable?

Viewership ratings for the NBA are currently taking a wild shot from beyond the arc—missing not just the basket but the entire scoreboard. This slump has analysts questioning whether the game’s charm is starting to fade.

The 2024-25 NBA season arrived with plenty of buzzworthy storylines: the rise of phenom Victor Wembanyama, the historic debut of 39-year-old Lakers superstar LeBron James playing alongside his 20-year-old son Bronny—the league’s first father-son duo in a regular-season game—and the Warriors facing life without one-half of the iconic Splash Brothers.

Despite these compelling narratives, the league has struggled to draw viewers to their screens. NBA broadcasts on ESPN have seen a steep 28% drop in viewership, averaging just 1.772 million viewers across the first 18 games aired through November 21. It seems the big plays on the court aren’t enough to keep audiences hooked this season.

The NBA is cooking up some exciting changes that could really spice up the season! They're thinking about giving the All-Star Game a fresh twist and shifting the NBA Cup to a new spot on the calendar. Instead of happening in November and December, the tournament might be moved to February, right after the NFL season wraps up, with the finals taking place after the All-Star Game on February 16th. This new schedule is designed to grab the attention of casual fans, especially since the trade deadline will now be before the All-Star Game, adding to the excitement. By lining up these events, the NBA is aiming to weave a more thrilling story for fans to enjoy.

By the Numbers:

  • 28%: The drop in NBA viewership on ESPN through November 21, averaging 1.77 million viewers per game.

  • 1.8 million: TNT’s flat average viewership per game during the same period.

  • $76 billion: The total value of the NBA’s new 11-year media rights deal, nearly tripling the revenue from the previous contract.

  • $12.12: The average cost per viewer for media partners under the new deal, compared to $6.40 per viewer for the NFL.

  • $25.45: The cost per viewer for Amazon’s NBA package, the most expensive of all media partners.

The situation is a bit tricky for the NBA and its media partners, who have invested heavily in broadcasting games under the new agreement. Even with this big spend, viewership numbers are dropping, which makes it tough to justify the cost per viewer, especially when you look at more consistent performers like the NFL. The task ahead is for media partners to come up with creative ways to capture audience interest and boost revenue. This needs to be done while also dealing with broader issues the league faces, such as too many games, player rest strategies, and changing viewer habits.

Potential Factors Pushing Down Ratings:

  • Social Justice Backlash: The NBA’s political stance, including initiatives like “Black Lives Matter” jerseys, has alienated some right-leaning viewers and drawn criticism from conservative pundits.

  • Too Many Games: The 82-game season makes individual games feel less significant compared to the NFL’s 17-game format.

  • Predictable Play: Heavy reliance on three-point shooting has made games feel repetitive, with less diversity in playing styles.

  • Lack of Continuity: Frequent player moves, alternate jerseys, and inconsistent court designs make it harder for fans to follow teams.

  • Social Media Highlights: Fans can watch game highlights and storylines on social media without needing to tune in live.

  • Fewer American Stars: Top players like Jokic, Doncic, and Antetokounmpo are international, making it harder to connect with U.S. audiences.

The NBA’s ratings slump is a wake-up call for the league and its media partners. With social media highlights replacing live viewership and games feeling less meaningful, fans are tuning out. To turn things around, the NBA needs to make games more engaging and reconnect with its audience. The potential is there—now it’s about making every game count.

Flames of Desperation: Inmates at Red Onion Prison Burn Themselves to Protest 'Unbearable' Conditions

Virginia’s Black Legislative Caucus is urging Governor Glenn Youngkin and the state’s Department of Corrections to launch an independent investigation into allegations of abuse and poor conditions at Red Onion State Prison. The call for action follows reports that at least six inmates have set themselves on fire since September, citing intolerable living conditions.

Kevin “Rashid” Johnson, an inmate at Red Onion, revealed the incidents through Prison Radio, a platform for prisoner stories. Johnson claimed the protests stem from systemic abuse, racism, and the harsh environment at the supermax facility. He reported that two inmates self-immolated in September in desperate attempts to escape the prison's conditions. One inmate, Ekong Eshiet, described his act as one of “desperation,” not protest.

Key Allegations at Red Onion State Prison:

  • Abuse and Neglect: Inmates report experiencing racial and physical abuse by correctional officers.

  • Medical Neglect: Allegations include withholding medication and ignoring chronic illnesses.

  • Inhumane Living Conditions: Claims of excessive solitary confinement, inedible food covered in maggots, and violent dog attacks by guards.

  • Psychological Impact: Multiple inmates with histories of self-harm resorting to extreme actions like self-immolation.

Another inmate, Charles Coleman, alleged that he suffered from chronic heart disease but was denied medical care, enduring repeated physical and psychological abuse by prison staff. These claims have fueled demands for transparency and accountability.

Governor Youngkin acknowledged the incidents, stating the Department of Corrections had investigated the six cases in 2024. Officials concluded the burns were caused by tampered electrical outlets. However, critics argue the investigations have not addressed the broader allegations of abuse and neglect.

The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus Responds:

  • Called for an independent investigation into Red Onion’s practices.

  • Highlighted systemic issues including solitary confinement lasting over 600 days.

  • Emphasized the urgency of addressing alleged human rights violations.

In response, Chad Dotson, Virginia’s Department of Corrections director, dismissed the claims as politically motivated. Dotson also noted that all six inmates involved had histories of self-harm and invited legislators to visit state facilities to verify conditions firsthand.

Red Onion’s history of scrutiny includes past probes by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. Advocates continue to push for accountability, emphasizing that the alleged inhumane conditions highlight a deeper need for prison reform in Virginia.
