It’s Taco Tuesday, BFA. The Supreme Court just reopened a painful question in Mississippi: how fair is a death sentence when Black jurors may have been pushed out of the room? Terry Pitchford’s case is now another reminder that justice often starts with who gets seated.

🔥 Black Men Didn’t Leave The News, The News Left Them

⚡ THE SPARK
Black men didn’t leave the news. The news left them first.
A new focus group study from Navigator Research confirms what a lot of people already felt in their gut: Black men have moved on from mainstream media. YouTube, podcasts, independent creators, and social feeds are now the primary information diet. One 45-year-old Black man from Decatur said it plainly: “I used to watch a lot of mainstream news, but they’ve been bought out.” That one sentence carries a whole diagnosis. This isn’t a ratings problem or an algorithm problem. It’s a trust problem. And for a growing number of Black men, that trust didn’t just erode, it collapsed.
🧠 THE LAYER BELOW
The surface read is that Black men are becoming more skeptical of institutions. The deeper read is more specific: they stopped feeling seen by the people who were supposed to be informing them.
-
This isn’t about media bias. It’s about media arrogance. There’s a difference between coverage that gets the facts wrong and coverage that gets the feeling wrong. A lot of mainstream news technically reports on Black men while clearly not understanding them. That gap, between being covered and being understood, is exactly where trust dies. When men feel packaged into polling categories or trotted out as a demographic crisis to be explained, they stop watching. Not out of ignorance. Out of self-respect.
-
The creator economy became the new barbershop. Podcasts, YouTube channels, and independent livestreams now do what the barbershop has always done, give men a space to process the world on their own terms. The appeal of someone like Joe Budden and Roland Martin can exist in the same conversation because this was never about ideology. It’s about tone. People want someone who sounds free. Someone who isn’t reading from a script designed to manage their reaction.
-
Economic pressure made the disconnect impossible to ignore. The study found widespread stress around groceries, housing, gas, and healthcare. When everyday survival feels uncertain, a panel of pundits in a TV studio dissecting political strategy feels like a different planet. Black men aren’t just asking what happened. They’re asking who’s going to tell them the truth about why everything got harder, and they’ve largely decided it isn’t anyone on cable.
🎯 THE REAL QUESTION
When a podcaster feels more honest than a credentialed journalist, what does that say about credentials?
🔮 WHAT’S NEXT
The lazy conclusion is that Black men are uninformed or disengaged. The accurate conclusion is that they’ve built a parallel information world because the original one stopped being worth their time.
That comes with real risk. When institutional trust breaks down, misinformation moves fast and fills the vacuum. But it also creates real opening. Independent Black media has a genuine shot at doing what legacy outlets couldn’t, reporting that is sharp, culturally fluent, honest about power, and rooted in actual lived experience rather than focus-grouped neutrality. The future doesn’t belong to the biggest platforms. It belongs to the ones Black men actually believe.
Trust is the new media currency. And right now, the legacy outlets are broke.
CAST YOUR VOTE
92.8% of you voted “Yes, use the leverage” in last week’s poll: Should Black athletes boycott schools in states accused of weakening Black voting power?
-
“What other choice do we have, we could take it up a notch we have the NBA and what they can contribute to those states that are trying to take our black vote.”
-
“Yes they should because how talented they are doesn’t matter if they don’t have a voice.”
-
“Children were a BIG part of the Civil Rights movement. They marched, were hosed, had dogs sicced on them, were beaten and arrested. The entire lunch counter protest were college students. When your entire community is under assault, everyone has a role to play.”
-
“Americans really have to unite to overthrow this greedy narcissist. SO not just black athletes but all athletes. People in every sector need to reduce their spending power. Everyone must vote in EVERY election not just the presidency. If everyone acts, we can really see what Americans can do. ”
Got thoughts? Don’t just vote and disappear. After you answer the poll, drop your real opinion in the “Additional Feedback” box on the next screen. We’ll anonymously feature some of the best responses in the community so your voice can actually be part of the conversation.

With racial tension, social media misinformation, white nationalists outside the courthouse, supporters on both sides, and 600 potential jurors being screened, this trial is shaping up to be one of the most emotionally charged cases in the country. 🇺🇸 Trump’s Iran Chaos Gets Messier As Talks Collapse And His Story Keeps Changing. Trump’s Iran strategy is looking more confusing by the hour. As Tehran reportedly backs away from negotiations over Israel’s attacks in Lebanon, the president can’t seem to keep one clear position. One minute, Trump says America has been “talking too much” and claims he doesn’t care if talks continue. Less than an hour later, he says negotiations are moving “at a rapid pace.” The whiplash comes as violence spreads, oil fears grow, and global leaders look for answers. Instead, they’re getting a president whose Iran policy seems to change by the mood. (MS Now)
✍🏾 Black Founders Are Getting Shut Out While AI Money Explodes. The AI boom is making billion-dollar headlines, but Black startup founders are still fighting for crumbs. New Crunchbase data shows Black-founded startups received just $942 million in U.S. venture funding in 2025, only 0.32% of all venture dollars. This year looks slightly better, with $643 million raised so far, but much of that came from one massive AI chip deal. The deeper story is brutal: even as Black consumers are heavily using AI tools, the wealth being created from the AI gold rush is not flowing back to Black founders. (CrunchBase)
